Moving Money

The First George W, 2006
Charcoal/pastel on paper

My work is based on images of power; men, in particular, who wield control over others. For many years, I looked only at contemporary images of power. I began to look at historical images and artifacts as a way of understanding how we, as a nation, have become an empire. This iconic image of George Washington, from a painting by Gilbert Stuart, is a ubiquitous symbol of not only our country’s history but our very currency, which in turn was a global symbol for wealth and power.
